Design Ethos
As a designer, my design philosophy centers on the belief that the spaces we inhabit at home directly impact our mood and mental state, influencing feelings of relaxation, creativity, inspiration, and excitement. A home should evolve and develop alongside its inhabitants, but the baseline environment should be curated with intention to customize function and aesthetic to the unique needs and desires of the homeowner. My design aesthetic is based on what I feel creates Understated Luxury. To me, understated luxury anchors on four key tenets: functionality, harmony, color psychology, and organic modernism.
Functionality is the most important consideration for any design project - regardless of how it may look, a space must meet the functional needs of its occupants for interior design to be considered successful. Harmony is achieved by balancing both function and visual impact while eliminating clutter. I seek to combine new, vintage, and antique items throughout a space to ensure it feels lived-in and welcoming rather than sterile or ‘out of a catalog’.
Color psychology is utilized to ensure each space evokes the mood that the client desires. Certain colors provide feelings of calm and tranquility, while others are more active and can generate excitement and boost serotonin. The specific colors that drive these sensations differ from client to client, and I will ensure that your space is fine-tuned to your personal preferences.
Organic modernism, in essence, combines modern amenities and functionality with organic materials and textures. A home should never feel garish or trendy, or too ‘shiny and new’. To create warm and welcoming environments, I like to utilize natural and aged materials with character and history, inspired by natural landscapes and found objects from my travels and life abroad.
